Relaxing in the Hampshire Countryside
Did you know that the location of Hampshire is less than a 90-minute drive from central London? Just a hop onto the M25, a skip onto the M3, a jump onto a few country lanes and you’ll be in the heart of the countryside and picturesque villages in no time. The beauty of the Hampshire countryside is that although you’re never too far away from anything, you’re still far enough to really notice the peace.
There’s no denying that we can all do with a short break away from our busy lives to unwind. Taking a step into the tranquil environment of the countryside, away from day-to-day tasks, work, commuting and general stress has proven to provide physical, mental and psychological health benefits. It gives your brain and body the chance to play catch-up. Picture peaceful walks in the great outdoors amongst nature surrounded by local wildlife and relaxed picnics in the woodland, whilst soaking in the sun and cosy overnight stays at your favourite hotel.
Exploring Hampshire in the Summer
Hampshire is one of the most diverse and beautiful counties in England making it the ideal location and perfect base for your summer stay. The stunning luxury property that is Oakley Hall is nestled within 315 acres of private woodlands, gardens & grounds which you can explore with your loved ones. Our walking route map recommends a great selection of lovely walks that highlight the true beauty of the local attractions, from easygoing strolls to the nearby St Leonard’s Church or 6km hikes around farmlands and woodlands. The topiary gardens are a unique feature of the Oakley Hall grounds which you won’t want to miss, as well as gigantic sequoia trees that were originally imported from America by the Bramston family in the 1800s.
And whilst the countryside is more than enough to keep you happy during your trip, there are plenty of things to do in Hampshire in the summer for an action-packed trip. The county of Hampshire is encompassed with a rich and interesting history, which can be seen from the many beautiful castles, houses and ruins dotted across the county. Our personal favourites include Winchester Cathedral, the house of Jane Austen, Basing House and Highclere Castle (the main setting of the Downton Abbey television series!). For modern history enthusiasts, the docks of Southampton and Portsmouth are home to gorgeous views of an incredible coastline to the sea and an exciting range of museums & naval ships that can explored.
For our guests who are 18 years and older, there are many vineyards in Hampshire and a wide range of gin distilleries and breweries – some of which offer tours & tastings. Our team can recommend the world-renowned Bombay Sapphire Distillery which is just a 10-minute drive/taxi ride down the road, Hambledon Vineyard and the Andwell Brewing Company.
If you’re looking to explore the best places a little further afield from Basingstoke, Oakley Hall is less than a 60-minute drive from the nearest beach. Take a stroll along Lepe Beach (Southampton), count the cruise ships from Hill Head (Stubbington) or paddle board at Lee-on-the-Solent. For a sandy beach we recommend West Wittering (Chichester) which is perfect for picnic lunches, paddling and beach games.
The New Forest is also right on our doorstep for you to explore. Hike amongst magical woodlands and wild ponies, visit the New Forest Wakeboarding & Aqua Park or take a trip to the picturesque villages of Beaulieu, Lyndhurt or Brokenhurst for a spot of lunch.
